UGEP (CONVERSEER) – The traditional ceremony of breaking the teeth of the new Ebinyang, Obol Ofem Ikpi Eteng a.k.a Kunta, took place today, 24 October, at the palace of Obol Lopon of Ugep. This followed the throwing of the traditional towel yesterday, signifying his selection as the new Ebinyang or Opalapala.
Chiefs from Ugom in Ijiman, Kekomkolo in Ijom, and Egbizum in Ikpakapit attended the event, alongside youths, kepon members, and the new Ebinyang’s wife.
After the ceremony, he was escorted to his community, marking a significant step in his traditional role.
The Ebinyang holds a significant position as the chief priest of Ugep, considered the eye of the gods. This role is deeply rooted in tradition and spirituality, emphasising the importance of the Ebinyang in Ugep’s cultural and religious practices.
