CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has on Wednesday, 8th October, inaugurated a Caretaker Committee in Cross River State.

This follows the approval by the National Working Committee (NWC) on 30th September 2025.

According to a press statement signed by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary of the party, the constitution of the new Caretaker Committee “follows the expiration of the tenure of the State Executive Committee of the Cross River State Chapter having been elected four years ago.”

The Caretaker Committee has Rt. Hon. Bassey Eko Ewa as Chairman, Dr Bassey Joseph Adim as Secretary, as well as 16 others as members. The inauguration was held in Calabar, the state capital.

“The Caretaker Committee is to manage the affairs of the Party in Cross River State from Wednesday, 1st October 2025, for a period not exceeding 3 months, or until such a time a new State Executive Committee will be elected in the State,” the statement added.

In his inaugural speech, the new Caretaker Committee chairman, Hon. Ewa, said the Committee is standing on the legal backing of the court, stressing the need for reconciliation.

According to him, the party has no faction in Cross River. He, however, called on the aggrieved members to join hands to build the party as the Committee charts a way to bring everyone under one umbrella.

“For too long, our great party in this state has been divided by personal interests and narrow leadership styles. We cannot continue with a system where the opinion of a few people, even when wrong, is treated as law, while the majority are silenced.

“That is not democracy. In a true democratic administration, there must be a meeting point of ideas, a convergence of opinions. No one person or group of persons has all the answers. Two good heads, as they say, are better than one.

“Over the past four years, we have seen the painful consequences of disunity and exclusion. Under the previous administration, we lost members, we lost elections, and most painfully, we lost the trust of the grassroots, the very people who have always stood with the PDP. Many of them have suffered from the effects of poor governance by the ruling APC. This is not the future we promised them.

“But today, we must draw a clear line between the past and the future. The time has come to rebuild. The time has come to restore trust, fairness, and inclusiveness in our party. We are democrats, and we must show that democracy begins from within. Henceforth, the PDP in Cross River State will be guided by openness, justice, and collective decision-making about the ‘people’ and it’s about democracy,” Ewa stated.
