UNICROSS, FRSC Deepen Partnership on Road Safety, Research

By Kingsley Agim

The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has reaffirmed its commitment to strategic collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to advance research and student-focused initiatives aimed at promoting safer road use.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Francisca Bassey, made this known on Friday, April 24, 2026, when the Cross River State Sector Commander of the Corps, Innocent Etuk, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to her office.

Professor Bassey emphasized the need for proper driver education, adherence to standardized driving manuals, and strict enforcement of traffic regulations as key measures to reduce road accidents.

She also appealed for the Corps’ intervention in managing traffic around the university, particularly at the main gate, where congestion, roadside trading, and safety concerns have become prevalent.

Earlier, Corps Commander Etuk outlined key areas of collaboration between the FRSC and the university, including the promotion of data-driven research to tackle road traffic accidents and the strengthening of institutional partnerships.

He further proposed initiatives such as encouraging students to serve as Road Safety Ambassadors, improving road signage within the campus, and establishing a functional driving school in the institution.

The Sector Commander noted that such initiatives would not only enhance safety consciousness among students but also contribute to national efforts in reducing road crashes.

Both parties expressed optimism about the partnership, agreeing to sustain engagement in areas that promote safety awareness, responsible road use, and academic collaboration.
