IBADAN (CONVERSEER) – The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away at the age of 90.

The revered monarch reportedly died in the early hours of Monday during ongoing events marking his 90th birthday and the first anniversary of his ascension to the throne.

Oba Olakulehin became the Olubadan following the demise of his predecessor, Oba Lekan Balogun, and had only recently marked one year on the throne.

A source within the Olubadan-in-Council confirmed the news to Punch, stating that while the traditional council has received the report of his death, the official announcement is expected to come from the Oyo State Government.

“We received the message that the paramount ruler passed away this morning. He has joined his forefathers. Though it has to be officially announced by the state government,” the source said.

Another palace source corroborated the information, revealing that the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, who is next in line to the throne and a former governor of Oyo State, is currently outside the country.

“He must have been briefed,” the source added.

As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Government is yet to issue an official statement.

Oba Olakulehin’s passing marks the end of a short yet significant reign, and the people of Ibadanland await formal confirmation and details regarding burial rites and succession.
