RABAT (CONVERSEER) – Nigeria began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania in a Group C encounter at the Fez Stadium on Tuesday.
The Super Eagles, runners-up at the previous tournament, showed early intent as they dominated possession and territory, particularly in the first half. Akor Adams came close to opening the scoring in the 11th minute, but his powerful header from a corner kick struck the woodwork.
Eric Chelle’s side continued to press, with Victor Osimhen denied on 35 minutes after Tanzania defender Bakari Mwamnyeto produced a crucial goal-line clearance. Nigeria eventually broke the deadlock a minute later when Semi Ajayi rose highest to head home an Alex Iwobi delivery.
Samuel Chukwueze nearly doubled Nigeria’s advantage just before the interval, but Tanzania goalkeeper Zuberi Foba made a fine save to push his effort over the crossbar.
Nigeria thought they had extended their lead shortly after the restart through Osimhen, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Tanzania capitalised moments later, drawing level in the 50th minute as Charles M’Mombwa connected with a looping cross from Novatus Miroshi.

The response from the Super Eagles was immediate. Just two minutes after conceding, Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s lead, finishing clinically after another well-weighted assist from Iwobi.
Despite late pressure from the Taifa Stars, Nigeria managed the closing stages effectively to secure all three points and start their AFCON campaign on a positive note as they pursue their first continental title since 2013.
Nigeria return to Fez Stadium on Saturday to face Tunisia in their next Group C match as they push for another win.
Victory would confirm the Super Eagles’ qualification for the Round of 16 of this AFCON.
As Nigeria face Tunisia on Saturday, Tanzania will be up against old rivals Uganda on the same day in an East African Derby.
