Having cancer is not a death sentence. You can survive it, just like 18-year-old Tabot Genta, who conquered stage 4 cancer, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria.
Genta’s journey began in March 2024 when she was admitted to a primary hospital following symptoms that led to a cervical lymph node excision biopsy.
Initial findings suggested Hodgkin’s Lymphoma from a histology report at UCTH. To further confirm diagnosis, an immunohistochemistry test was conducted at the National Hospital, Abuja, which confirmed Stage 4, T Cell/Histiocyte-Rich, Large B Cell Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
In May 2024, she was referred to the Paediatric Oncology Unit, Department of Paediatrics, UCTH, Calabar, where her treatment journey officially began. Tabot underwent six cycles of chemotherapy (R-CHOP), which she successfully completed in November 2024 with remarkable clinical and haematological improvement.
“Today, we celebrate her recovery and renewed hope for the future,” a statement from the Management of UCTH on Tuesday, noted.
Tabot Genta is a Cameroonian orphan and refugee whose story reflects resilience in the face of adversity.
Her care coordinator, Dr Ojong Charles, Consultant Family Physician at UCTH, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Chief Medical Director for unwavering support from admission through treatment to discharge. Gratitude also goes to the Medical Superintendent of General Hospital, Dr Takim, and the dedicated Paediatric Oncology team at UCTH for their exceptional care and commitment.
“We also extend immense thanks to the compassionate individuals and well-wishers across the world whose generous contributions amounting to millions of naira made her treatment possible and gave her a second chance at life,” the statement added.
Below is Genta’s transformation before and after her recovery. Her story is a powerful reminder that with timely care, collaboration, and compassion, hope can triumph over even the toughest battles.
