KANO (CONVERSEER) – A group of women in Kano State has launched “Mata Zalla,” a female-only tricycle transport service designed to serve women while providing employment opportunities for female drivers.
“Mata Zalla” translates to “exclusively women” in Hausa.
Under the initiative, women operate the tricycles and transport only female passengers, creating a system that aligns with the conservative cultural environment of the state. Men, on the other hand, operate separate tricycles that cater specifically to male passengers.
Beyond addressing cultural concerns, the programme is also focused on economic empowerment. By training and supporting women to become keke drivers, the project opens doors for women to participate in a transportation industry that has long been dominated by men.
Another highlight of the service is its affordable pricing, as the Mata Zalla tricycles reportedly charge lower fares to encourage more women to use the service.
