CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – The Cross River State Government has issued a strong warning to individuals and groups involved in illegal mining and related activities linked to rising security concerns across the state.
The Commissioner for Lands, Chief Felix Idem, in an official statement on Wednesday, said the government is taking decisive measures to protect citizens and safeguard natural resources.
Chief Idem acknowledged growing public concern over unlawful mining operations, which he said have been tied to the activities of bandits and other criminal elements. He stressed that the government has intensified surveillance and will not hesitate to clamp down on anyone found culpable.
According to him, the Ministry of Lands is working in close coordination with the Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce Committee, chaired by Prince Paul Effiong, as well as various security agencies. The partnership, he noted, is aimed at identifying illegal operators, shutting down unauthorised sites, and ensuring stricter enforcement of land-use regulations.
He disclosed that regular inspections and monitoring exercises will be carried out across mining locations to ensure compliance with government directives. He added that the rumoured presence of bandits within parts of the state is already being addressed through reinforced security operations.

Chief Idem urged residents, businesses, and organisations to respect land-use laws, noting that adherence is essential to public safety and environmental protection. He emphasised that the government will not tolerate any act capable of undermining peace, security, or resource sustainability.
He called on the public to report suspicious activities, assuring that the government is committed to keeping Cross River State safe and secure for all.
