ABUJA (CONVERSEER) – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has refuted claims that it directed senior secondary students to take specific subjects in the forthcoming 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

In a statement issued by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, the Council described the reports as false and misleading, urging the public to disregard them.

“We wish to categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject,” Adeshina stated.

According to WAEC, the responsibility for developing and regulating school curricula in Nigeria lies solely with the Federal Government, while the Council’s duty is limited to conducting assessments in line with government-approved policies.

“The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government. WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country,” the statement explained.

The Council assured candidates, schools, and parents of its continued commitment to professionalism, transparency, and fairness in the conduct of the 2026 WASSCE for School Candidates. It further emphasised that all candidates would be given equal opportunities during the examination and assessment process.

“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are advised to disregard the misleading reports and rely solely on official communications from the Council for accurate information regarding examination guidelines for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” WAEC added.
