UGEP (CONVERSEER) – Ugep, headquarters of Yakurr Local Government Area came alive on Friday, 15th August 2025, as Hon. Moses Osogi, Commissioner for Environment, was conferred with the prestigious chieftaincy title of Obol Okamke I of Ugep.
The honour was bestowed by the Obol Lopon of Ugep and Paramount Ruler of Yakurr, His Royal Majesty, Obol (Dr) Ofem Ubana Eteng, in recognition of Osogi’s dedication to public service, community development and humanitarian contributions across Cross River State.
The colourful ceremony attracted dignitaries from government, academia and traditional institutions. The Governor of Cross River State was represented by the Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Pst. Ekpenyong Ene Cobham, while the Chairman of Abi Local Government Area, Hon. Egbala Bassey, also joined in celebrating the new chief.
Recognition of Service
According to the Paramount Ruler, the title reflects Osogi’s “exceptional commitment to humanity, community growth and the welfare of the people.” The Commissioner has been lauded for his developmental initiatives in Yakurr, Abi, and beyond, making him a role model for public service and grassroots impact.
In his acceptance speech, Osogi expressed gratitude to the monarch and people of Ugep for the confidence reposed in him. He described the honour as both humbling and inspiring, pledging to uphold the responsibilities and cultural values attached to the title.

“This recognition comes with great responsibilities and expectations. I promise to serve with even more passion, dedication and humility,” he said.
Culture and Celebration
The day’s festivities were marked by traditional dances, music and cultural displays that highlighted the rich heritage of the Yakurr people. Performances came from the Ima Love Dance Group of Ediba, Attitude Boys of Adadama, Ikpobi and Ayoro cultural groups of Anong, Utal Cultural Dance Group of Nko, and the Ugep Urban Development Authority (UUDA).

The blend of culture and celebration created an atmosphere of unity and pride, with residents and visitors filling the city to witness the historic moment.

The event was widely covered by local and regional media organisations, including Abakaliki FM, FAD FM, CRBC, NTA, The Lens Online, Converseer Online Newspaper, Primed Communication and Beagles Newspaper, ensuring that the honour bestowed on Osogi resonated beyond Ugep.
