CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – The outgoing Treasurer of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (MPCS), Dr (Mrs) Naomi Ernest, has formally concluded her tenure, describing her stewardship as a journey sustained by grace, resilience, and collective spirit.

Delivering her farewell address titled “Gratitude, Growth and New Chapter” to members of the Society, on Friday, Dr Ernest expressed profound appreciation for the trust and support she received during her service, noting that her election to office was not by merit but “by the election of grace.”

Reflecting on her tenure, she acknowledged facing trials, criticisms, and even personal attacks, including an incident where a corporator spat at her along the hospital corridor. Despite such experiences, she said her faith sustained her, enabling her to remain steadfast in service.

“My service has been both humbling and inspiring. Together, we strengthened our financial systems, improved accountability, and secured the trust of our members. Above all, we ensured that the funds entrusted to us remained safe, judiciously managed, and used for the growth of the Society,” she said.

Dr Ernest particularly appreciated her colleagues in the executive council and Dr Gloria Archibong, who nominated her to represent AMLSN-UCTH on the Council, stressing that their support was invaluable to her journey.

Offering advice to her successor and the incoming executive, she urged them to be selfless, compassionate, and firm in upholding integrity.

She also encouraged calmness in the face of provocation and emphasised that true leadership is measured by impact and servanthood rather than titles or positions.

“In a world that often rewards shortcuts and showmanship, values such as selflessness, integrity, and compassion may appear old-fashioned. Yet these are the foundations of a lasting legacy,” she stated.

In her closing remarks, Dr Ernest assured members that their monies had been prudently managed and not misused, saying she bowed out with a clear conscience.

She prayed for divine wisdom and strength for the incoming executives to lead the cooperative to greater heights.
