ANFIELD (CONVERSEER) – Liverpool suffered another damaging setback in a turbulent season as they fell to a humiliating 4–1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League at Anfield on Wednesday.
Arne Slot’s side produced a chaotic defensive display, with costly errors from senior players contributing to a night that deepened concerns over their form.
The match began disastrously for the hosts. With only six minutes played, captain Virgil van Dijk raised his arm unnecessarily inside the area, prompting referee Alejandro Hernandez to award a penalty.
Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ivan Perisic calmly sent Giorgi Mamardashvili the wrong way to give PSV an early lead and silence the home supporters.
Liverpool responded with urgency and were level 10 minutes later. Cody Gakpo’s powerful strike forced a save from Matej Kovar, but the PSV goalkeeper could only palm the ball into the path of Dominik Szoboszlai, who drove home from close range.
The equaliser lifted the atmosphere, and Liverpool pressed energetically for the remainder of the first half. Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike all forced Kovar into important saves as the Reds showed rare fluency and confidence.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically after the interval. PSV regained control 10 minutes into the second half when Mauro Junior threaded an incisive pass through the centre of Liverpool’s defence, allowing Guus Til to run onto the ball and finish with authority past Mamardashvili.
Liverpool’s frailties were exposed further soon afterwards. Ibrahima Konate misjudged a lofted ball that dropped under his feet, allowing the visitors to surge forward.
Substitute Couhaib Driouech reacted quickly after an initial effort rebounded off the post, firing in PSV’s third to send the away fans into delirium.
Driouech added his second in stoppage time, completing a comprehensive rout that triggered loud boos around Anfield.
The defeat leaves Liverpool sitting 13th in the league phase table with three matches remaining, increasing the pressure on Slot as the Reds struggle to find stability domestically and in Europe.
