CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – The Cross River State Police Command has clarified what happened in Obanliku Local Government Area on Monday, giving an account of what led to the shooting of one Peter Odey at Utuhu Junction.

The police, via a statement signed by ASP Sunday Eitokpah, Police Public Relations Officer in the state on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Rashid Afegbua, on Tuesday, said they have commenced an investigation of the matter.

Recall that an incident, alleged to have involved gambling, caused unrest at the junction, leading to the shooting by a police officer.

Clarifying the facts, the police said “operatives were on a lawful operation to arrest suspects involved in a case of Assault Occasioning Harm, reported by Elizabeth Akinya (F). The suspects include Peter Odey (M), also known as “Ola,” Michael Ashaba (M), and others. The operation was not related to unlawful gambling, as reported online.”

Explaining further, the statement noted that, “On 09th February, 2026 at about 1400hrs, the suspects violently resisted arrest, mobilised youths, attacked the police team, and forcefully dispossessed them of two (2) assault rifles, posing a serious threat to public safety.

“In the course of efforts to prevent the escape of armed suspects and recover police firearms, Peter Odey (M) sustained a gunshot injury and was immediately taken to Sacred Heart Hospital, Obudu, for treatment. Three police officers injured during the attack were taken to General Hospital, Sankwala.

“With support from Military Tactical Teams, community leaders, and government authorities, the two assault rifles were recovered, the patrol vehicle retrieved, and normalcy restored.”

It added, “The Command has commenced an internal investigation and reiterates that no police officer is above the law. The public is urged to remain calm, avoid speculation, and allow due process to prevail.

“Further updates will be communicated as investigations progress.”
