NYCN suspends Ugep Chairman over alleged misconduct

By Odey Ojeka

UGEP (CONVERSEER) – The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Yakurr Chapter, has suspended Comrade (Elder) Sunday Ottoh, Chapter Chairman of Ugep branch, on allegations of misconduct.

Ottoh was suspended for 21 days during the stakeholders meeting that took place at Biko Biko town hall, Ugep, on Thursday.

The meeting, Converseer reports, was attended by 51 stakeholders, of whom 45 supported the motion.

The suspension motion was proposed by the Yakurr NYCN chairman, Comrade Balimwor Ekpe, after the accused failed to appear or send a representative despite an invitation.

The suspension follows a petition filed by the Ugep NYCN Vice Chairman, Comrade (Mrs) Sarah Nsot, and addressed to the NYCN Yakurr chapter chairman.

In the letter, the Vice Chairman of NYCN Ugep accused Comrade Ottoh of personalisation and misuse of council property, misappropriation of revenue from the metal‑dealers’ point, personalisation of borehole‑drillers’ revenue point, financial indebtedness and public misrepresentation, negligence of core responsibilities, violation of the National Youth Council of Nigeria Constitution, and loss of neutrality, among other charges.

The petition was copied to the Paramount Ruler of Yakurr, the Obol Lopon of Ugep HRM Obol Ofem Ubana Eteng, the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Cross River State Chairman (Comrade Emmanuel Olayi), and the Divisional Police Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Ugep Division.

The Yakurr NYCN chairman announced that a Complaint and Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Comrade Evangelist Ubana Joseph, would conduct the investigation. The committee members are Comrade Ekpo Isoyip, Comrade Philip Uket, Comrade Obol Obol Ebri, Comrade Ikpi Nneoyi, and Comrade John Ubi Okon.

Both the accused, Comrade Elder Sunday Ottoh, and the petitioner, Comrade (Mrs) Sarah Nsot, were ordered to step aside for the 21‑day investigative period. The committee will determine whether the chairman is guilty of the alleged offences.

Given that Comrade Elder Sunday Ottoh hails from Ijiman Council Ward, the Yakurr chairman appointed Comrade Sunday Oje, NYCN Chairman of Ijiman, as interim Chairman of NYCN Ugep until the disciplinary process concludes.

The Yakurr Chairman also said that the suspended Ugep NYCN Chairman must return all council properties to the Interim Chairman, Comrade Sunday Oje, during the suspension period.

The decision reflects the stakeholders’ commitment to upholding the National Youth Council of Nigeria’s constitution and ensuring accountability within the organisation.

Converseer will provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
