Newcastle edge wasteful Man City to dent title hopes

ST. JAMES’ PARK (CONVERSEER) – Manchester City suffered a costly setback in their Premier League title pursuit on Saturday after falling 2-1 to Newcastle United at St James’ Park, in a match defined by missed chances from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland.

Both players squandered two clear opportunities each, leaving Harvey Barnes to seize the moment with a decisive brace that secured a vital win for the hosts.

The opening half delivered the highest number of big chances created in a league match this season, as both sides traded opportunities but failed to show composure in front of goal.

Haaland first dinked wide after a superb through ball from Jeremy Doku, before striking straight at Nick Pope following a cut-back from Nico O’Reilly. Foden then fired wide of the far post after combining neatly with Rayan Cherki.

Newcastle created their share of openings too, but Nick Woltemade was twice denied by Gianluigi Donnarumma. Barnes, however, produced the most glaring miss of the half when he failed to convert from point-blank range after connecting with a sweeping cross.

City also had two penalty appeals rejected. The first came when Foden went down under Fabian Schär’s challenge after getting his shot off, and the second when a Doku effort struck the arm of Malick Thiaw, with the referee waving play on in both instances.

The second half produced fewer chances but more decisive moments. Barnes redeemed himself by drilling a low shot into the corner in the 64th minute to give Newcastle the lead. City responded quickly as Rúben Dias levelled the score with a heavily deflected strike off Schär.

Newcastle, however, refused to retreat. Bruno Guimarães struck the bar with a header before a scramble in the box resulted in the ball being bundled over the line, aided by an error from Donnarumma. A lengthy VAR review confirmed the goal, putting the hosts back in front.

City pushed hard in the eight additional minutes but failed to find a breakthrough. The defeat marks their fourth in 12 Premier League matches, presenting Arsenal with a significant opportunity to extend their advantage at the top ahead of the North London derby.
