CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in partnership with the Ukpai Empowerment Foundation, has marked the 2025 International Youth Day with a conference in Calabar, Cross River State, aimed at celebrating and empowering young people.
The event, held on Wednesday, 13 August 2025, brought together youths and stakeholders from across the state for a day of discussions, competitions, and skill-building activities.
Speaking at the event, the Cross River State Representative on the NDDC Board, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke PhD, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to youth development.
Dr Duke who was represented by Barr. Bassey Ita Duke, outlined ongoing youth-friendly programmes, including educational sponsorships, skill acquisition workshops, internships, and sports festivals targeted at discovering talents in sports and technology.
“The NDDC aims to prepare youths to compete globally through these initiatives, fostering future leaders and champions emerging from the Niger Delta,” Duke said.
Dr Oboma Nathan of the Ukpai Empowerment Foundation commended Cross River youths for their positive energy and active participation in the programme, contrasting it with negative trends observed elsewhere.

He praised the Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, for his transformative leadership and underscored the importance of digital skills and technological engagement in a globalised economy.
Nathan also noted that the Foundation would use feedback from the event to shape future programmes for greater impact.

“The celebration not only emphasised the vital role of youth in national development but also showcased the proactive steps being taken by NDDC to ensure that young people in Cross River and the wider Niger Delta are well-prepared for the future,” he said.
The conference featured a dance competition, technology and skills development sessions, and interactive discussions designed to equip young people with tools to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Certificates were presented to participants at the close of the event.
