ABUJA (CONVERSEER) – The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) has issued a formal clarification over reports alleging that a cadet, Stephen Kubama Gani, mysteriously disappeared from the institution without action from the authorities.
In a statement signed by Major Reuben Kovangiya, Academy Public Relations Officer, on Friday, the NDA described the circulating reports as misleading, stressing that the Academy followed due process after the cadet was found to be absent without permission.
According to the statement, Cadet Gani was admitted into the Academy as part of the 76 Regular Course and began training on 26 August 2024. His training progressed normally until 28 April 2025, when he absented himself from the Academy without official approval.
The NDA said it notified his parents three days after his absence, in line with established cadet administration procedures. After seven days, and following the relevant administrative processes, the cadet was struck off strength.

The Academy explained that it later received feedback from the family indicating that Cadet Gani’s whereabouts remained unknown. This, it said, prompted renewed investigations, which are ongoing.
The NDA emphasised that cadet administration is governed by strict military laws and decades-old traditions, refuting allegations that it failed to act on the disappearance.
The statement further noted that the institution maintains structures to ensure cadet safety, including regular inspections and stop checks, stressing that it remains committed to protecting all trainees under its care.
The Academy reaffirmed its dedication to discipline, diligence, loyalty and honour, describing itself as a centre of military and academic excellence committed to producing competent officers for the Nigerian Armed Forces.
