CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – Hon. Justice Franca Isoni of the Family Court 1, Calabar Division, has convicted and sentenced Mr Uduak Jack Anietie to 10 years imprisonment for sexually assaulting a child.

Anietie, aged 28, was sentenced on Friday, 12 December 2025.

According to the charge, the convict committed the offence in 2020 in the Nyanghasang area of Calabar after luring the victim to an apartment with the pretext of helping her get a job.

The conviction was secured by Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), a non-profit organisation which promotes and protects the fundamental rights of children and indigent women.

Barr. James Ibor, Principal Counsel of BRCI, commended other actors who ensured the victim got justice.

Ibor said the decision on the matter was delayed because the judge went on a national assignment.

“We thank the Cross River State Police Command, the Ministry of Justice, and my team, Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, for the time invested in ensuring that justice is served. Cross River State has zero tolerance for sexual abuse,” Ibor said in a statement he posted on Facebook.

Converseer reports that BRCI has secured the conviction of over eight rapists in the last two years.
