Budapest (Converseer) – Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, on Sunday conceded defeat after what he called a ″painful″ election result, ending 16 years in power for a powerful figure in the far-right movement allied with U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“I congratulated the victorious party,″ Orbán told supporters in Budapest.
“We are going to serve the Hungarian nation and our homeland from opposition as well.”
Initial official results show opposition leader Peter Magyar’s Tisza party dominating the election.
Magyar said that Orbán conceded defeat in Sunday’s election in a phone call, in a bombshell election with repercussions across Europe and beyond.
Converseer reports that polling stations across Hungary opened on Sunday at 6:00 a.m. and closed at 7:00 p.m. (1700 GMT), as voters turned out for a closely watched election.
Orbán and his main challenger, Magyar, cast their votes at separate polling stations in Budapest at nearly the same time.
