PRETORIA (CONVERSEER) – The funeral service of relatives 18-year-old Phehello Motaung and 7-year-old Lesego Sefatsa is underway in Sebokeng Zone 14, as relatives and community members mourn the loss of the two learners killed in a tragic scholar transport crash earlier this month.
Phehello and Lesego were among 14 young learners who died when the minibus taxi they were travelling in collided with a truck on the Golden Highway near Vanderbijlpark on Monday, 19 January 2026, en route to school.
The accident has plunged them into deep grief and sparked renewed calls for safer scholar transport.
At Friday’s memorial service in Sebokeng, parents and friends remembered the children for their bright personalities and promise.
Lesego was described as a joyful and intelligent Grade 2 pupil, while Phehello, a Grade 11 learner, was remembered for his commitment to church and love of music.
Many families are holding individual funeral services today, with a mass funeral scheduled for Sunday at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Ground for other victims.
The driver of the scholar transport vehicle has been charged with multiple counts of murder in connection with the crash.
