Fire razes shops worth millions in Calabar spare parts market

CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – Shop and business owners are counting their losses following the fire outbreak that occurred on Friday morning in Calabar, Cross River State.

According to an impeccable source, the outbreak which occurred around 3 AM destroyed shops and goods worth millions of naira at Bedwell by Watt Market, Calabar South.

Though the cause of the fire is unknown at the time of this report and no life was lost as well. Bedwell is where motor spare parts are being sold.

“The fire burned people’s shops and the goods inside. The course of the fire is unknown,” the source, Odibest Michael said.

One of the victims cried bitterly, calling for help from the government and the relevant authorities.

According to the victim, his first shop in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, was burnt six years ago.

“He had to come down to Calabar to start life afresh. He started by selling phone accessories with a wheelbarrow for four years before he was able to get a shop,” Michael said.

Another victim who deals in female footwear could not pick even a pin from his shop as everything was burnt to the ground.

Efforts for residents and shop owners to put out the fire proved abortive as no help came from the fire service, which is currently under rehabilitation.

Converseer reports that this is the second time a fire outbreak has been reported at Bedwell in less than a year.

Meanwhile, a similar incident happened in Ikom less than one week ago, as fire destroyed properties worth millions of naira.
