UGEP (CONVERSEER) – In a significant cultural event, Ofem Ebri Eteng a.k.a Kunta from Ugom Ijiman Ugep has been identified as the new Ebinyang or Opalapala, the chief priest of Ugep. This follows the passing of the former Ebinyang, who hailed from Ijom Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The succession to the esteemed position of Ebinyang is traditionally limited to three patriclans: Ugom in Ijiman, Kekomkolo in Ijom, and Egbizum in Ikpakapit town.
As per cultural norms, the new Ebinyang will observe a period of confinement, after which he will adhere to a unique dress code, abstaining from wearing shirts for the rest of his life.
The Ebinyang or Opalapala holds a revered position, responsible for safeguarding the emblem of the Kota and influencing its spirit through rituals and appeasement activities. The role is shrouded in mystery and fear, with associated activities considered sacred and powerful.
Tradition dictates that the chiefs throw a traditional towel at the chosen individual, who must accept it as a sign of acceptance.

According to Ofem Neill’s book, “The Obol Lopon Institution of Ugep,” the new Ebinyang will remain in his predecessor’s house for six months, during which the gods of vengeance are believed to guide him into the spiritual realm.
During confinement, the new Ebinyang wears a raffia skirt and uses ejono as body cosmetic. Upon completion of the seclusion period, he will pay homage to the ten matrilineal clans, solidifying his position as the spiritual leader and eye of the gods of Ugep.
