Court jails 2 for stepping on naira notes

By Joe Udo

IBADAN (CONVERSEER) – A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, has convicted and sentenced two people, David Chukwudi and Mary Temitope, to six months imprisonment each for stepping on the naira note.

The duo were sentenced by Justice Nkeonye Maha, on Monday.

According to the judge, her judgment was based on the convicts’ plea bargain and the evidence tendered against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibadan Zonal Office.

Maha further said that the convicts were first-time offenders and had promised to be of good behaviour henceforth.

“Therefore, Chukwudi is sentenced to six months imprisonment or an option of N50,000.

“Similarly, Temitope is sentenced to six months imprisonment or an option of N50,000,” she said.

Each of the convicts had, shortly before the judgment, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing them.

They both said that they were remorseful of their shameful actions, ready to work to be an ambassador of change, campaigning against the desecration of naira currency.

Earlier, the prosecutor, A.S. Salihu, had told the court that the convicts committed the crime on March 11, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Salihu added that the detectives of the anti-graft body arrested the duo after a video of how they were dancing on naira notes at a party had gone viral on social media.

The prosecution noted that the offence contravened the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.
