Anambra to build 10,000 low-cost homes to tackle accommodation issues

AWKA (CONVERSEER) – The Anambra State Government has announced plans to construct 10,000 low-cost housing units in Isiagu, Awka South Local Government Area, as part of a renewed effort to tackle accommodation challenges faced by civil servants and low-income families.

Commissioner for Housing, Paully Onyeka, disclosed the development on Saturday, stating that the project will be delivered through a Public–Private Partnership with real estate developers. He confirmed that construction will commence during the dry season, following the resolution of earlier disagreements between the government and its private partners.

Onyeka explained that Governor Chukwuma Soludo had approved the scheme long ago, but last-minute bureaucratic bottlenecks stalled its take-off. He appeared before the State Assembly Committee on Appropriation to defend the ministry’s 2026 budget, where he described the initiative as a structured programme aimed at expanding access to safe and affordable housing.

“The 10,000 low-cost housing units will soon be a reality. It will improve the housing deficits of civil servants and low-income earners in the state,” Onyeka said. He added that all outstanding issues with private sector participants in the PPP arrangement had been resolved, paving the way for immediate mobilisation to site.

The commissioner said the governor’s ongoing road expansion projects have opened new estate corridors in the hinterlands, making housing development more feasible. He also highlighted the ministry’s technical role in various state infrastructure works, including upgrades at Ekwueme Square, improvements at Commissioners’ Quarters, and the construction of a new Trauma Centre at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku.

“Our obligation and tasks transcend the few things you see under the Ministry of Housing; even when the building projects are domiciled under other MDAs, we execute them,” he noted.

Onyeka further revealed that the state, in collaboration with the Federal Government, will embark on an additional 500 housing units dedicated to low-income earners, in line with Governor Soludo’s broader plan for affordable home ownership.
