BOKI (CONVERSEER) – Community leaders of Abo-Obisu Village in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State have banished a 60-year-old woman, Florence Osang, over alleged witchcraft.
Converseer learned that Osang, a cocoa farmer, was banished for 10 years over the display of witchcraft, resulting in the alleged killing of a 40-year-old man by name, Moses Mbia Tawo.
According to Business Day, the trouble began when the late Tawo, who was the Chairman of the Community, felt that Osang had cleared more farmland than she should have cleared as a woman. So, the Community leaders fined her to pay N350,000.
The Community leaders arrested and detained her at the Abo Police Station for failing to pay the fine. Afterwards, the Community chairman fell sick and later died, causing the Community leaders to summon Florence Osang to the Village Centre.
However, a letter signed by Joseph Eyo and Co-Solicitors to Florence Osang and addressed to the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission and the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) Calabar, condemned the action of the Community.
“Notice of infraction on the Rights of our client by Chief Tawor Osang, Chief Dan Mbia Ajimy Peter Tawor Osang all of Abo Mkpang Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State who subjected our client to inhumane, barbaric, primitive acts of torture.
“We are instructed by our client to bring to your notice the sordid and barbaric, primitive and traditional, harmful practices meted out on our client (Florence Osang) on 7th February 2025.
“Our client was forced to give out her Cocoa farm on long lease to collect money to pay the juju priest at twenty million naira.
“Our client is now homeless without food to sustain herself and family”, the lawyer, while threatening the Community to do the needful be ready to face the legal consequences of its action, stated.
Converseer reports that in 2018, late Thomas Tawo (aka General Iron), former SA on Forest Security to former Governor Ben Ayade, led a mob that burnt 15 elderly persons to death in Boki.
