UYO (CONVERSEER) – Akwa Ibom State has rapidly emerged as the principal tourism destination for residents of the South-South and South-East. Each weekend witnesses a sizeable migration of businesspeople and leisure seekers from Aba, Umuahia, Port Harcourt, Owerri and neighbouring Bayelsa into the cities of Uyo, Eket and Ikot Ekpene.
This recurrent influx has transformed the state into a vibrant centre of hospitality, recreation and commerce.
A notable share of weekend visitors, particularly entrepreneurs and traders from Aba, Port Haircourt habitually unwind at prominent hospitality establishments such as Four Points by Sheraton, Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort .
Many of these guests spend evenings socialising in Uyo’s hotels and lounges; while some choose modest lodgings, affluent visitors prefer the comfort and exclusivity afforded by upscale hotels.
On Saturdays, residents and visitors alike take advantage of the city’s recreational assets: promenading and exercising along Four Lanes and Ring Road 3, or utilising the facilities of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium for matches and fitness activities.
Down at Nwaniba, visitors who lodge at the Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort enjoy swimming, relaxed sit-outs and alfresco dining, savouring bush meat and freshly caught fish at Nwaniba Beach.
Similarly, Eket’s beach lodges attract afternoon revellers who spend the day by the shore swimming, socialising, sampling smoked fish and drinking locally produced palm wine.
These leisure practices collectively underscore Akwa Ibom’s appeal as a multifaceted tourism destination offering coastal experiences, urban recreation and gastronomic attractions.
Several factors account for this steady patronage. Foremost among them is the perception of safety: many visitors cite the security of life and property as a decisive reason for choosing Akwa Ibom as a weekend retreat.
Complementing this are the state’s well-maintained roads, the cleanliness of public spaces, and the quality of tourism infrastructure developed over successive administrations.

The current governor, Umo Bassey Eno, has reinforced a culture of maintenance and visible public investment in infrastructure, thereby enhancing the state’s attractiveness to both domestic and regional tourists.
The Need To Build A Stronger Security Network
Akwa Ibom enjoys a reputation as one of Nigeria’s more secure states, a distinction attributable to sustained governmental commitment and the proactive engagement of security agencies. Nevertheless, recent months have seen an uptick in motor-vehicle thefts.
Perpetrators sometimes opportunistic visitors have exploited large public gatherings, notably on match days at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, targeting commonly owned models such as Toyota Corolla and Camry, which are often disassembled and traded in parts.
Nigerian police commands have, commendably, intercepted a number of these thefts and facilitated the return of vehicles to their owners.
With the approaching festive season, an escalation in tourist numbers to Uyo, Eket and Ikot Ekpene is anticipated. It is therefore essential that primary security agencies intensify their presence and coordination, especially around Christmas villages, hotels, beaches and popular entertainment venues.
Heightened vigilance is necessary to deter not only theft and burglary but also the more sinister crimes that have been reported in parts of the country, including various forms of kidnapping and organ-trafficking. Preventive deployment, rapid-response capabilities and community policing initiatives will be critical to preserving public confidence.
Governor Eno’s ongoing interventions repairing road surfaces to eliminate potholes and expanding solar-powered street lighting across urban and peri-urban areas ,are practical measures that will enhance safety by improving visibility and reducing crime opportunities after dark.
The planned public opening of Arise Park is likely to attract families and leisure-seekers in large numbers; the availability of family accommodation and scenic gardens will further consolidate Akwa Ibom’s recreational offerings.
To complement state security efforts, several additional measures should be pursued. Emergency medical services and trauma clinics must be placed on high alert to respond to road accidents and alcohol-related emergencies.
Business owners and hospitality operators should invest in private security personnel to protect guests’ vehicles and property, and ensure that fire-safety equipment such as appropriate extinguishers is installed and maintained. Strengthening public–private partnerships—between government security agencies, local businesses and community associations will multiply the effectiveness of preventive measures.
The Akwa Ibom’s ascent as a premier tourism hub is the outcome of deliberate infrastructure development, environmental stewardship and an emphasis on security. To sustain and build upon these gains, stakeholders must redouble efforts to fortify the security architecture, enhance emergency preparedness and maintain the high standards of public amenities that have made the state a preferred destination.
Continuous investment, vigilance and collaborative governance will ensure that Akwa Ibom’s tourism promise endures and flourishes.
