African brotherhood will prevail, says Morocco’s King

RABAT (CONVERSEER) – Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has said African fraternity will prevail following what he described as “deplorable” incidents that marred the closing moments of the Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal.

The final was overshadowed by controversy after Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch in protest against a VAR-awarded penalty. The players later returned and went on to secure a 1–0 victory after extra time.

Tensions escalated further after the match, as groups of Senegalese supporters attempted to enter the pitch, leading to confrontations with Moroccan security personnel.

In a statement released by the royal palace, King Mohammed VI described the incidents as regrettable but stressed that emotions often run high in competitive sport. He said that once tempers cool, inter-African brotherhood would naturally reassert itself.

The monarch highlighted the long-standing historical and diplomatic ties between Morocco and Senegal, insisting that no isolated incident would undermine the cooperation and solidarity built across the African continent.

King Mohammed VI also praised the overall organisation of the tournament, describing it as a success for Africa and a demonstration of Morocco’s development and capacity to host major international events. He commended Moroccan citizens for their nationwide mobilisation, noting that their efforts contributed to a peaceful, festive, and widely praised competition.

Africa’s football governing body, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has said it will take appropriate action after reviewing reports of the incidents. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also condemned the conduct of some Senegalese players and staff following the final.
