Cross River cracks down on illegal timber dumping, issues 2-week ultimatum for evacuation

Calabar (Converseer) – The Cross River State Forestry Commission (CRSFC) has issued a stern directive to timber dealers over the growing incidence of illegal timber dumping along roadsides across the state.

In a press release dated April 8, 2026, and signed by Ntufam Rt. Hon. Deac. George O’ben-Etchi, PhD, Chairman/CEO of the CRSFC, the Commission expressed concern that some dealers are violating established regulations by depositing timber outside designated government gantries meant for proper storage and processing.

The Commission condemned the practice, noting that it undermines the work of monitoring and evacuation teams while disrupting ongoing efforts to enforce compliance with forestry guidelines.

“All timber dealers are hereby directed to immediately evacuate all timber from roadside locations to officially approved government gantries within two weeks from the date of this notice,” the statement read.

It warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe would attract strict enforcement measures, including the confiscation of any timber found to be unlawfully dumped along roadsides.

The Commission stressed that the directive forms part of broader efforts to promote sustainable forestry practices and ensure the effective management of timber resources across the state.

It further directed all Commissioners, Zonal Officers, Forest Officers and Chief Rangers to enforce the order and ensure full compliance among timber operators.
