CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – The University of Calabar (UNICAL) will commence activities for its 38th convocation from April 7 to April 12, 2026.

The events include a convocation lecture, to be delivered by Maj. Gen. Garba Wahab on the topic, “Redefining National Security in an Era of Endemic Insecurity: The Role of the Tertiary Institution.”

There would also be a research fair, award of degrees, alumni induction and endowment fund launch.

Disclosing these during a press conference on Thursday in the institution’s Senate Chamber, the Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, Prof. Offiong Offiong, said the convocation signals a new phase of reforms in the institution.

Offiong said his administration is committed to tackling admission and employment racketeering.

He recalled that his inaugural address focused on transparency, skills development and institutional rebranding.

He listed priorities such as academic excellence, research, student welfare infrastructure development, ICT-driven processes, quality assurance, global partnerships and campus security.

The VC expressed concern over past negative reports involving admissions, employment and certificate racketeering.

“We have introduced measures to check these malaise one of which is restoring the Central Admissions Committee.

“The officer linked to admission irregularities is undergoing disciplinary action, now, our employments would follow due process, including public advertisement and government approval,” he said.

He warned against paying for admission or jobs and urged the public to report such cases.

The VC also disclosed efforts to tackle certificate forgery and improve digital systems in the university.
