"Protect the forest, preserve the future" - C'River Forestry Boss

CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – In continued efforts to strengthen community participation in forest conservation, the Chairman of the Cross River State Forestry Commission, Ntufam, Rt. Hon. Deacon (Dr) George O’ben-Etchi, has emphasised the critical role of grassroots involvement in safeguarding forest resources.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Forest Management Committee (FMC) for Ekong–Anaku Community in Ekinta Clan at the Palace of the Clan Head of Ekinta Clan, Akamkpa Local Government Area, Dr O’ben-Etchi stated that collaboration between the committee and Forestry Commission officials would enhance the monitoring of forest reserves, maintenance of forest boundaries, identification of sensitive areas, and support for demarcation activities to ensure the protection and sustainable use of the forest ecosystem.

He noted that the initiative forms part of the Commission’s broader strategy to promote sustainable forest management through community-based forest governance. According to him, members of the committee emerged through a consensus-driven and merit-based process designed to ensure transparency, fairness, and adequate community representation.

Dr O’ben-Etchi further assured the committee of the Commission’s technical and institutional support, stressing that strong partnerships between the Forestry Commission and host communities remain essential to achieving long-term conservation goals. “The committee will also assist in strengthening cooperation between the Commission and host communities while promoting peaceful coexistence in forest management activities,” he said.

The Forestry Commission Chairman urged all stakeholders and the general public to consciously protect the forest in order to preserve the future for generations yet unborn.

Responding on behalf of the community, the Clan Head of Ekinta Clan and Chairman of the Forest Management Committee, HRH Orbon Sir Celestine Awor, expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Forestry Commission for the confidence reposed in the committee. He described the initiative as a commendable step toward protecting the forest heritage of the people for present and future generations, pledging the full cooperation of the traditional council in enforcing existing forestry laws.

The ceremony was attended by officials of the Forestry Commission, community leaders, and members of the newly inaugurated committee. Notable attendees included the Director of Conservation, Protection and Compliance, Mr Ibiang Essien; Mrs Yibala; the Zonal Coordinator, South East, Mrs Rose Ayang; and the Forest Officer for Oban, Mr Charles Aki, alongside other committee members.
