CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – Dr Martina Ntino, Executive Director of Hope Ability Empowerment Initiative, has applauded recent reforms announced for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) nationwide.

In an interview with Hit FM, in Calabar, Ntino explained that the new policies represented progress toward equal educational opportunities for candidates with disabilities seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

The disability inclusion advocate noted that provisions such as registration refunds, transportation assistance, and accommodation arrangements for blind applicants and their guides, were practical steps toward fairness in the examinations nationwide.

She emphasised that clear communication at the registration stage was essential, noting that many prospective candidates might miss available benefits, if information is not properly relayed

She expressed support for assistive materials, including audiobooks and customised support services for individuals with visual, hearing, cognitive, and learning challenges participating in the examination in 2026.

“Authorities must ensure that candidates residing in remote communities receive adequate awareness, guidance, and logistical backing so that distance or poverty does not hinder participation in 2026,” she said.

She recommended stronger supervision of private examination centres and urged the publication of detailed guidelines outlining every available concession to promote accountability, uniformity, and transparency throughout the registration process.

Ntino cautioned that requesting upfront payments from blind candidates without clearly stating that refunds will follow can create anxiety, financial strain, and feelings of exclusion among persons with disabilities nationwide.
