ABUJA (CONVERSEER) – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released a new timetable for the 2027 general election.
Recall that the Commission had earlier fixed Saturday, 20 February 2027 for the Presidential and National Assembly Elections and Saturday, 6 March 2027 for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections pursuant to the Electoral Act, 2022.
Following the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026, which introduced adjustments to statutory timelines governing pre-election and electoral activities, the Commission has reviewed and realigned the schedule to ensure full compliance with the new legal framework.
The review followed the outcry of Muslims who feel the elections will clash with their Ramadan celebrations. In response, the INEC, on Thursday, reviewed its election timetable to an earlier date.
Below is the timetable for the 2027 general elections:
• 23 April 2026 to 30 May 2026: Conduct of Party Primaries
• 19 August 2026: Presidential and National Assembly campaigns commence
• 9 September 2026: Governorship and State Houses of Assembly campaigns commence
• Campaigns shall end 24 hours before Election Day
• 16 January 2027: Presidential and National Assembly elections
• 6 February 2027: Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections
“Political parties are strongly advised to adhere strictly to these timelines. The Commission will enforce compliance with the law,” a statement issued by Mallam Mohammed Kudu Harun, National Commissioner, Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, read.
