Police probe TikTok user over false rape claims

ABEOKUTA (CONVERSEER) – The Ogun State Police Command has probed a TikTok user known as Mirabel (@mirab351) following investigations that found her viral rape allegations to be false.

On February 15, @mirab351 claimed a stranger assaulted her after a knock at her door, leading to widespread support from feminists, NGOS, and activist VeryDarkMan, plus involvement from Lagos DSVA before Ogun police took over.

Doubts emerged quickly: neighbours heard no disturbance, past fund-soliciting lies surfaced, her suicide attempt symptoms mismatched poisoning, and she skipped forensic exams while a threatening DM matched her typing style.

Ogun Police clarified no arrest occurred, noting her fragile condition and hospitalisation after reporting at lbafo station, with the investigation ongoing amid inconsistencies; the case has intensified debates on gender roles, male victims like one alleging drink-drugging assault, and singer Simi’s call to harshly punish rapists, drawing backlash for overlooking false claims.

According to @Olami_deeEbony, Mirabel had claimed she was raped and cut with a blade by an unknown man. However, police investigations uncovered multiple inconsistencies in her story.

According to her neighbours, there were no signs of a break-in or screams for help. Phone records and text messages also did not support her version of events.

Police further stated that Mirabel gave conflicting statements and refused to undergo full medical and forensic examinations, despite these being offered by authorities and NGOs.

She was detained for providing false information, wasting police resources, and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Her TikTok account has since been set to private, several videos have been deleted, and some donors are reportedly demanding refunds.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed to Vanguard via SMS that upon receiving information about the incident, the Commissioner of Police directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ibafo Division to immediately establish contact with the victim.

According to him, the victim reported at the Ibafo Police Station, where preliminary facts surrounding the incident were obtained. Initial findings, however, revealed that the alleged assault occurred within the Ogijo jurisdiction.

He explained that the victim was promptly escorted to a medical facility for assessment and urgent medical attention.

“Following preliminary treatment, she was subsequently conveyed to the Ogijo Police Station, being the jurisdiction where the incident occurred, for proper documentation and continuation of investigative procedures,” he said.

The Police spokesperson further noted that due to the victim’s fragile condition, she has been referred for extensive medical care to aid her recovery and support the ongoing investigation.
