ADDIS ABABA (CONVERSEER) – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has congratulated President Paul Biya on his re-election following the official proclamation of the final results of Cameroon’s 12 October 2025 presidential election by the country’s Constitutional Council.

In a statement issued by the AUC on Wednesday, Youssouf commended the people of Cameroon for their participation in the electoral process but expressed deep concern over reports of post-election violence, repression, and arrests of protesters and political actors.

While acknowledging Biya’s victory, the AUC Chairperson called for restraint from all parties, urging both institutional and political actors to prioritise peace, social cohesion, and stability.

“The Chairperson calls on all institutional and political actors to exercise restraint and work towards the preservation of social cohesion, peace, and stability in Cameroon,” the statement read.

Youssouf also urged Cameroonian authorities to give topmost priority to inclusive national dialogue and consultation with all political stakeholders to foster unity and consensus. He emphasised that dialogue remains critical to ensuring peace and strengthening democratic governance.

He reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to supporting the people of Cameroon in their pursuit of democracy, social justice, and the rule of law.

President Biya, 92, has been in power since 1982 and remains one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. His re-election has sparked mixed reactions, with opposition parties and civil society groups alleging irregularities and calling for greater transparency in the country’s democratic processes.
